The Biggest Influence in your life is You.

altOn Keep it Magic Radio, Storm and I spent the month of December on topics that put you in a place of empowerment in your own life.   We spent a lot of time on issues of authority, bullying, finding hope in the middle of adversity and addressing your parental issues.   (If you haven’t listened to the shows they are available on http://keepitmagic.com/index.php/en/media/keep-it-magic-radio/archives.html , Blog Talk Radio and on ITunes. )

What each December show ended up revolving around is taking responsibility for your own behaviors and deciding what type of person you need to be.    That is an easy thing to preach, but a difficult thing to embrace.  So often we feel the outside influences that de-rail our day, or even our self esteem.  It’s seems impossible to anticipate surprise attacks in the form of “constructive criticism” and not have that tear apart your positive energy.

Being no stranger to these examples, I know from where I speak.  Being a healer and reader, I hear how many of us have this same challenge.  We are constantly looking to others for validation; it’s our nature.   We regularly doubt our own viability when others of authority disagree with us and let’s not forget the approval we seek from loved ones.

So, how do we get to a place where we can own and define our own happiness even in these situations of vulnerability?  How do we create a stronger boundary that is always in place and not based in fight or flight responses?

We become the biggest influence in our own life.

We all know that our actions define us more than any other influencers.  You are what you do and even the Law of Attraction talks about that.   It’s funny how so many people think that the Law of Attraction begins and ends with the mind, but your thoughts and intentions are only the beginning of the process.   How you act upon those thoughts and intentions are the key to the process.

Yes, you do need to dig deeper into your beliefs.  Yes, you do need to uncover those fears and understand how they are driving you.  These are all great initial steps and without them you have nothing.  This is the FIRST step, meaning that there are more steps to follow.  Without changing your actions your fears and beliefs will be the only thing that defines you.

You can be as focused as you want on losing weight, but if you never change your actions to move more and eat less then weight loss will only remain in your mind.   If you pray to quit smoking and keep buying new packs of cigarettes, you will never become smoke free.  These are just obvious and annoying examples, but what about your desire to cut out the drama in your life?  Are you acting in a petty and manipulative way?  Of course you aren’t, the drama is everyone else’s fault.   At least that is what we want to think the truth is.

With this New Year in front of you, how do you want to approach it?   Same old –same old?  It might actually be time to back up your intentions with your actions.  If you want more friends in your life, then you may have to leave the house more often and put yourself in more social situations.  If you want to limit the drama in your life, you may have to limit your Facebook time to 15 minutes a day.  (Have you ever noticed the biggest pot stirrers in Facebook are the ones who camps on it all day?)

With 2012 stirring up our perspectives, this is the perfect opportunity to get a new one for you.  I know it’s time for me to take inventory on my influencers and who they are.  It’s time for me to become my own biggest influencer and live the life and spirit that calls to me.

Wait! There’s More; Patty’s Recipe for Everyday Spirituality Continued

As I promised last month, FULL disclosure.

Yes, there are times and (loong stretches of time) when I completely abandon my cute and cuddly spiritual practice. That’s when my faithful companions stress and depression remind me that life is better for me when my ego is aligned with my spirit.  In my struggling I typically find that I have become ungrounded and have started to wander off the ranch. It’s my classic reaction to my challenges even though I know staying in “in by body” and connected to earth and my co-creating relationship with god is a better way to face my life.  At times like these I light a Blessed Herbal Stability and Self Esteem candle.

I’m not saying that the path is super obvious and easy when co-creating with god, there are still bumps in the road, disappointments and trials. It’s just that I can focus better and tap into my creativity much easier.  I have clarity, and can see the hints and help that are placed right in front of me. No, I am not being told what to do and when to do it; I am shown potentials and options. Be assured that they are not as black and white as I write about here, but maybe that can be as a benefit of being enlightened, we’ll see. Here’s the scenario; if I go this way I will find joy, success, co-operation, enthusiasm. If I don’t, I may be in for another round of disappointment.  Each choice comes with the challenge to decide how happy I want to be.  You can imagine which direction I go when I’m still married to the need to be punished or sabotaged.

Kathryn (Yarborough of Everyday Spirituality on Blog talk radio) is very much into full disclosure and asked me where I am still a work in progress.  I have to say, I haven’t quite mastered feeling worthy of success, and that what I have created, others would find value in it for themselves.  I admit there is a certain amount of rebelliousness that happened around my book. I chalked it up to being protective. I wasn’t prepared to shoulder criticism or rejection. Looking back I see where I went overboard with that and walled myself off and ignored my beautiful book to save myself from facing my fears. Yes that’s a little nutty.  If you struggle with this, spark up a Coventry Creations Success Affirmation candle

This attitude pushed me into isolation, and that is not a natural way for my spirit to be.  That choice caused me pain too.  Now I am willing to be a little more vulnerable where my book is concerned, and I’m learning to do it without sacrificing my individuality.  I can be soft and have a sense of humor about myself and embrace the knowing that not everything I make graduates from hanging by a magnet on the refrigerator door to a frame in a gallery.  I don’t have to take that personally or feel like I’ve failed because of it.

Of course the next question is what’s easy and what’s hard in doing my everyday spiritual practice?  The easy thing for me to do is find beauty and joy in at least one thing every day.  Even on the crap days I can find something that will soften me up, and I am eternally grateful that I can do that.  What has been harder for me to do is stay light hearted about myself, especially when I have to stretch and do something I really, really am scared to do, or tangle with something in the self worth department.  Loving myself and accepting myself (warts and all) gets a work out every day.

In closing I’d like to share what I have learned so far on my spiritual journey.  Love heals everything, as over used as that statement is; it is the basic truth that we can fall back on every time we are sick, in grief, angry, betrayed.  You name it.  The key to that statement is to learn what it means to you and where you are lacking love.  Ultimately it will boil down to a lack of self love and self acceptance.  Even though that is at the core of most of our wounds, start the process with learning the meaning behind how others have hurt you.  All of the pain you have experienced by the hand of another was called to you by what you believe about yourself.  Light a Blessed Herbal Heart candle to support you and help you get into the space of forgiving.

In other words, everything in your life, you had a hand in creating.  All that chaos both wonderful and painful, you are partly if not fully responsible for.  If you dare to love it, all of it, you will heal your life. So be patient with yourself. Learn how to love yourself again, and do it every day, though forgiveness and letting go. If you can make loving yourself your spiritual practice you will re-create yourself and your life. You will be very happy with the results.

In meditation I would ask god, what do I need…to do? And I always hear, love yourself.  Finally I asked, what does that mean; because sitting here saying over and over “I love myself” is not really working.  The answer I got was to see myself as god sees me.  That took some time, and some practice and some conversations with god to find out how he/she/it saw me so I could then see myself that way.  It was quite an eye opener, and that worked for me – Now I ask god, how do you see me today?  So far I have not disappointed god one iota and that makes me feel like my low self worth is really a waste of my energy and time and kinda silly.  I invite you to let god show you how much you are valued.

Doing this kind of healing is not something you can do exclusively on your own.  There will be times when you can’t see a way out of your darkness.  Please, please, please, ask for help sorting out your myths from your truths.  You can change your life, you can be happy, you can heal.  The foundation of Coventry Creations is all about being a resource of help and encouragement. Both Jacki and I are skilled and trained spiritual healers, and happy to be of service to you.  My website is www.HealingWithPattyShaw.com. You can find Jacki through www.coventrycreations.com.
